Frequently asked questions

What do JW Lees look for in a tenant?
Different pubs have different requirements; a food-led
pub needs someone with food skills whereas a community-led pub needs someone with a different
skill set. However, drive, enthusiasm and a great personality are needed for any pub.

Do I need a solicitor and accountant?
We encourage all tenants to seek professional
assistance before taking a pub. It's a big commitment so ensuring you have the best advice
is crucial.

If I do well in my first three years will you penalise me with a big rent increase?
We make it clear from the outset how we calculate
rent, so if the business grows, there will be a rent increase, but this will be negotiated and fairly. We
want to retain good tenants, not lose them through prohibitive rent increases.

What if I find the pub I take isn't for me?spacer

Despite all our best endeavours to make sure we have got the right person in the right pub, sometimes it doesn't work out. That is why we have a three months cooling-off period. This means you can walk away, but remember there's always a chance we could find you another pub.

How much will it cost me to take on a pub?
It very much depends on the pub, but there is financial support available if needed.

Do I need to have run a pub before to be a
JW Lees tenant?

Absolutely not. We're after the right people here, not the right experience. So long as you have the right attitude and a natural flair for business, whatever you don’t know about running a pub, we can help with training. Even if you're new to the pub game, running a pub and being your own boss really is easier than you think.
