Our Area Managers

Don't be put off by their official sounding title. Area Managers are there to look after you and look after the pub. They're the Brewery's first and foremost contact
with our managed houses, so you'll see a fair bit
of them.

The main aim of our managed house Area Managers is
to maximise the company return from the managed
house estate through optimising sales and controlling costs. So in a nutshell, make sure our managed
houses are as profitable as possible.

Their duties and responsibilities include:
1. Recruiting new General Managers for the managed house pubs, with the assistance of the Human Resources Manager, with a view to producing a shortlist of candidates for final interview with the Director of Retail.
2. Carry out monthly business review meetings with
General Managers to ensure that sales opportunities are being maximised and costs are being controlled in line with agreed budgets. In addition, Area Managers must also carry out ‘drop in’ unannounced visits on every outlet, during evenings and weekends.
3. Ensure each new General Manager receives a full induction programme, working with the Human Resource Manager.
4. Make recommendations for investment and prepare an annual budget, in consultation with the General Manager, for every managed house in their area. This must then be approved by the Director of Retail.
5. Carry out a full pub audit every quarter ensuring standards and legal compliances are being adhered to, with a copy given to the Director of Retail.

6. Carry out monthly area meetings, for all the pubs that fall
under their area.
7. Ensure all General Managers maintain the quality of JW Lees’ beers, including occasional sampling and regular cellar visits.
8. Attend weekly departmental meetings at the brewery, to discuss their area’s performance and activities for each pub.
9. Ensure all managed houses in their area are compliant with company and statutory health and safety legislation.
10. Ensure they’re fully conversant with all the back of house systems, with the assistance of the Administration Manager, including Microsoft packages.
11. Review the monthly profit and loss accounts with each managed house in their area with the General Manager,
Director of Retail and the Managing Director (note these are separate meetings).
12. Develop and support relief managers working in their area.
13. Monitor and maintain house standards through regular visits.
