Frequently asked questions

Do I need to have experience to be a
General Manager?

Yes. A pub is a business in its own right. You’ll need experience of managing people, monitoring profit and loss, hitting budgets and driving wet and dry sales.
Wet sales are bar sales, and all the drinks you sell.
Dry sales are the food side. Not all our managed
houses have a dry side.

Will I need a personal licence to be a
General Manager?

Yes. As an experienced operator, you’ll already have
a personal licence. For more info on obtaining your
personal licence, click here.

Do I need to have been a Head Chef to be a
General Manager?

No, not necessarily, however you’ll need experience of managing a kitchen team and excellent food skills.
Having experience as a Chef would be advantageous though. If you’re interested in pubs with no dry side
(pubs that don’t offer food) then you won’t need Head
Chef experience.

spacerDo all managed houses have managed kitchens?

No. At the moment we have 24 managed houses with managed kitchens. The others are a mixture of franchised kitchens and pubs that don’t do food at all. A franchised kitchen is a pub with a business opportunity for you,
where you rent the kitchen from JW Lees but you get to decide your menu and keep all the money you make
from selling the food.
